Fire and Ice: North Meets South

Stories, adventures and learnings from my graduate resarch in Natural Resource Ecology and Management at Oklahoma State University. I am working on pyric herbivory and landscpe ecology in British Columbia with Dr. Sam Fuhlendorf. We will focus on the fire:grazing interaction of Wood Bison and horses including the vegetation response to fire in the Northern Boreal forest and across BC. Stay tuned for the papers!!

Pyric herbivory: grazing driven by fire (Fuhlendorf, Engle, Kerby and Hamilton - 2009)

"A new focus on the ecological interaction of fire and grazing in which each disturbance is spatially and temporally dependent on the other and results in a landscape where disturbance is best described as a shifting mosaic (a landscape with patches that vary with time since disturbance) that is critical to ecological structure and function of many ecosystems...the spatial and temporal interaction of fire and grazing, where positive and negative feedbacks promote a shifting pattern of disturbance across the landscape... For ecosystems across the globe with a long history of fire and grazing, pyric herbivory with any grazing herbivore is likely more effective at restoring evolutionary disturbance patterns than a focus on restoring any large vertebrate while ignoring the interaction with fire and other disturbances..."

About Me

Sonja: I am a PhD Candidate at Oklahoma State University studying the fire-grazing interaction under Dr. Sam Fuhlendorf, as well as the owner of Shifting Mosaics Consulting. From 2006 - 2012, I was the Range Agrologist and Tenures Forester running the Range Program in the Fort Nelson Forest District for the Ministry of Forests and Range, Government of British Columbia, Canada. I am a P.Ag., R.P.Bio, FIT and an EP. I hold a B.Sc. (Agr.) major: Environmental Biology from McGill University and a B.A. (French) from the University of Victoria. I am a founding member of the Fort Nelson Invasive Plant Management Area as well as the Chair of the North East Prescribed Fire Council. I was the Northern Interior's Forest Service representative on the British Columbia Rx Fire Council. I am currently a Director on the Grasslands Conservation Council of BC, the President of the Society for Range Management (BC Chapter), a director of the Society for Ecological Restoration, BC and a past Vice-President of the BC Inistitute of Agrologists Peace Branch. I also serve as a member of Fort Nelson Search and Rescue and am an active member of the Fort Nelson Minerva women's group.
